THE MG4 has been voted the Northern Car of the Year for 2023 in the annual poll carried out by the 36-strong Northern Group of Motoring Writers.
The Group’s traditional award, the miner’s lamp, suitably inscribed, was presented to MG’s events and PR marketing manager Jasmine Jiang and her press office colleague Heather Webb, by NGMW chairman Andrew Evans at the annual northern test day organised by the SMMT at Wetherby racecourse.
“The MG4 is an antidote to the trend of making ludicrously fast, pricey and heavy electric halo products,” said Andrew. “It’s a simple, inexpensive, electric hatchback for the masses with enough performance and, importantly, range for most. Although there is a ridiculously fast one too!”
The lamp, a special symbol of the north, is nicknamed the Arthur – after Arthur Scargill, probably still the best-known miner in the country.
Northern Group members chose the best vehicle in each of six categories with the MG initially being named EV car of the year.
Other category winners were the Hyundai Kona (Small), Volkswagen ID.Buzz (Family), BMW Seven Series (Luxury), Lexus RX (SUV) and Kia EV6 GT (Fun).
